I have been working on all the aspects of my senior project since the beginning of this year. First semester we wrote our research paper and second semester we worked on the physical part of our project. I shadowed a lawyer and wrote a paper on judicial review. Overall, I've had a good experience doing my senior project because I did it on a subject that interests me. It has solidified my interest in pursuing a career in law and that was the goal. I'm excited to see how the experience and knowledge I gained during my project will benefit me in my journey to success!

My presentation has to be at least 10 minutes. My presentation is about 15 slides including my introduction and question slides. I am proud of my presentation because it encompasses my project really well and I think expresses my knowledge of my topic. I need to work on my eye contact and gesturing while presenting my project but I think that I've pretty well got my presentation down pat. I'm excited to present to the community and my judges so that I can finally be done with my senior project!
Today, I presented my project for the first time to my class. I thought it went pretty well. I was nervous that I wasn't going to have a long enough presentation but I ended up having a time of about 13 minutes. Hopefully, when I present to the community and the judges my time doesn't sway too much. I really don't want to get docked for not having a long enough presentation. In order to have a completed project I needed at least 20 hours of shadowing time with my mentor. I finished my shadowing time on my last trip to court in Gregory county. I'm relieved to have finished my project finally but its not the end yet. I still have to present to my class, community, and judges. I'm nervous but excited to finally be getting done with this project.
The Gregory country courthouse is actually in Burke, SD. I met my mentor in Burke at 9 a.m. and met with her client for a few minutes before court started. We sat for basically the whole criminal docket until her client was called. My mentor's client was actually from out of state so she had to try to convince the court to follow the client's home state's laws and statutes for sentencing. The court complied and we were the last case of the docket.
In order to finish my mentor hours I'm hoping I'll be able to attend court with my mentor in Gregory. If I am able to go I'll be able to complete all the hours I have left in one day. I really like going to court and seeing how the court handles the various cases that are presented. I've never been to the courthouse in Gregory either so I'm excited to see if it looks anything like the courthouses I've already seen. I won't be able to get any pictures though, which is unfortunate given that pictures are necessary to complete this project. It's hard to get pictures with my project because so much of what I'm seeing and working on is confidential.
My mentor is getting married tomorrow and has been doing last minute wedding preparations all week. I only have a few hours left to do but without my mentor I can't do them! My senior project teacher has given me until April 12th to finish mentoring. I'm a little frustrated with this project, I just want to finish it! I'm really excited for my mentor as well because, well, she's getting married!
My mentor has left the law firm that she was working at when I first started the mentor process with her. She is now trying to establish her own firm in Wessington Springs. So far, she has had a meeting with Wessington Spring's city council in order to get approval to get an office space in town. I really hope she gets to start her own firm because she is a really good lawyer and she deserves great things.
It's the beginning of March which means we really only have one month left to finish our project. I have about 6 hours left to shadow my mentor and I still have quite a ways to go to complete my 40 hours total of work on my project. I'll be sad to finally be done shadowing my mentor because the overall experience so far has been really great and educational. It has really helped me understand the occupation as a whole and opened my eyes to the small things lawyers do. It's no wonder they get paid so much!
My mentor is trying to move into another field of law that more deals with environmental law. She's given me a lot of topics to research in order to help her out. I'm excited to be helping her research this because her job is really busy. She's working towards writing a book about environmental law and maybe one day I'll get to read it and see some of the research I did for her.
